The Cross in Our Lives, Part One
Before Christ, the cross was an instrument of death; through Christ, it became a source of life. Pain and suffering once led to despair, and despair is spiritual death. In Christ, however, they have become a path toward liberation and the discovery of true life—a life that transcends the familiar conditions of this temporal existence. Every Sunday morning we proclaim: “Through the Cross, joy has come into all the world.” Did not the Cross precede the Resurrection and the life that burst forth from the tomb?

Volunteerism
Continuing the discussion regarding responsibility for and participation in the work of keeping our St. James parish a functioning and thriving community. Just like our own homes, our parish requires much ongoing labor and input to keep it alive and thriving.
I would like to start with acknowledging the persons already giving of themselves and committing their time and effort to our community. I fail to thank all of these people often enough. So this is an opportunity to express my thanks. It is also an opportunity to demonstrate how true volunteerism functions.
Speaking recently of the parish council and Sunday school, I would like to continue with thanks to Vince V. who served for many years simultaneously as both our parish council president and our Sunday school leader. Vince did much work to re-establish and re-found both of these important ministries and his work continues to manifest in both as they now continue to develop and flourish on top of his great effort and work.
I say Thank you! to Vince. I hope that you will also express this to him and hold him as very excellent models of volunteerism for our community.

Brethren, see with what large letters I am writing to you with my own hand. It is those who want to make a good showing in the flesh that would compel you to be circumcised, and only in order that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. For even those who receive circumcision do not themselves keep the law, but they desire to have you circumcised that they may glory in your flesh. But far be it from me to glory except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither circumcision counts for anything, nor uncircumcision, but a new creation. Peace and mercy be upon all who walk by this rule, upon the Israel of God. Henceforth let no man trouble me; for I bear on my body the marks of Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brethren. Amen.
Gospel: JOHN 3:13-17
The Lord said, “No one has ascended into heaven but he who descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.

On Reproof and the Joy of Repentance

In the spiritual life, sorrow caused for the sake of correction is medicine, not poison. When a physician cleanses a wound, he causes the patient pain, but that pain is salutary. In the same way, a pastoral word of reproof, spoken with love, grieves the carnal man but revives the spirit. The true joy of a pastor lies in the spiritual correction and growth of his flock. And the joy of the flock itself lies in the consolation that comes when their repentance heals the pastor’s sorrow and restores unity.
We live in a time when the human heart is exhausted by sorrows. Therefore, as Christians, we have no right to become a source of new and senseless sorrow where there is already so much grief. Our duty is to seek every opportunity for reconciliation, mutual forgiveness, and sincere prayer for one another. We are called to pray even for our enemies and unceasingly to ask God for that peace “which passeth all understanding”—the peace that comes from Christ Himself.
